Jennifer Lawrence is highly sought after by Hollywood directors and worth an estimated US $34-million, all at just 24 years old. In a short amount of time, she has become one of the most successful Hollywood actresses and one of the most recognizable faces in the world.
Still, with fame and fortune come the hardships, challenges and criticisms of being in the public eye. Lawrence has been publicly praised for her beauty, but she still finds herself constantly battling with the unrealistic expectations that come with being a Hollywood “it” girl.
Since the beginning of her career, Lawrence has freely spoken out about the challenges of being in the limelight and living up to unattainable body standards. In an interview with Flare magazine, she said:
“I like the way I look. I’m really sick of these actresses looking like birds. I’d rather look a little chubby on camera and then look like a person in real life, than look great on scene and look like a scarecrow in real life.”
Lawrence was never a childhood star. She is very much in touch with the world and people outside of the Hollywood bubble and knows what the average body type looks like. In Elle magazine, Lawrence said:
“In Hollywood, I’m obese. I’m considered a fat actress. I’m never going to starve myself for a part. I don’t want little girls to be like, ‘Oh I want to look like Katniss, so I’m going to skip dinner.’”
There will be times when we will be criticized in certain aspects of our personal and professional life, or advised to do something with which we might not necessarily agree, with the illusion that it will help advance us in our career.
In those times, it is important to stick to your beliefs and be confident in what you have learned and what you have to offer. In the end, you want to set a good example for those who are watching you, look up to you and respect you. Always remember to stay grounded and true to yourself and your values.
